Working with people with a thoracic-level spinal cord injury requires a great understanding of the potential of their functional capabilities. Due to the limited time afforded in the health care system, it is critical to have a solid understanding of how to utilize their strengths and teach them specific techniques to optimize their therapy time and improve their outcomes. A focus is on techniques to improve functional mobility and how to optimally progress them to be as independent as possible. In this course, J.J. Mowder-Tinney will provide specific skills to increase the success of their movements and illustrate interventions in a variety of different positions that can be performed in any setting. This course involves multiple demonstrations with real patients who have thoracic-level injuries to illustrate interventions that will optimize their function. This course is appropriate for PTs, PTAs, OTs, OTAs, and nurses and can be utilized in any patient setting.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Strategies to Optimize Independence in Bed Mobility With Someone With a Thoracic-Level Injury
This chapter will compare and contrast key strategies required when treating a person with a thoracic-level injury to improve functional independence. The focus will be on bed mobility activities, including rolling, supine to long sit, and short sit to long sit in both directions.
2. Strategies to Optimize Independence in Transfers in a Person With a Thoracic-Level Injury
This chapter will compare and contrast key strategies required when treating a person with a thoracic-level injury to improve functional independence. The focus will be on how to start with even surface transfers and progress to uneven surface transfers. Different options for floor-to-chair transfers will be discussed as well.
3. Strategies to Optimize Independence in Advanced Wheelchair Skills in a Person With a Thoracic-Level Injury
This chapter will discuss how to choose the best strategies to facilitate a person with a thoracic level of injury's ability to perform wheelies and curbs. It will demonstrate training the balance point of a wheelie along with tips for training curbs.
4. Strengthening and Transitioning Activities for a Person With a Thoracic-Level Injury
This chapter will cover how to design a variety of activities for strengthening a person with a thoracic-level injury. This will include optimal techniques to improve the ability to transition within movements and can be performed in any position: supine, sitting in wheelchair, short sitting, long sitting, and sidelying.
5. Aerobic Conditioning Activities
This chapter will discuss how to design an optimal aerobic conditioning program to promote ideal cardiovascular health. This will include evidence-based support for strategies for aerobic conditioning as well as environmental adjustments that can be used for best outcomes.
6. Designing Home Exercise Programs
This chapter will review the different options available to design home exercise programs to improve functional outcomes.
