This course dives deeper into the more complex presentation of HSD and EDS. While these conditions can be confusing in their presentation, there are also correlated conditions that are more prevalent with a diagnosis of HSD or EDS that can be confusing, overlapping, and/or misunderstood. We begin to take a closer look at some of the more commonly seen issues and their potential causes, along with red flags in this population for the practitioner to be able to recognize and treat or refer out as appropriate. This course is appropriate for those in physical therapy, occupational therapy, athletic training, and nursing.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Comorbidities and Overlapping Conditions in HSD/EDS
HSD and EDS are connective tissue disorders involving multiple systems throughout the body, and this can make the patient more at risk of developing certain other complex or rare conditions. The multiple systems, MCAS, and dysautonomia are briefly reviewed in this chapter.
2. Head and Neck Conditions in HSD/EDS: Red Flags
This chapter reviews the red flag conditions that are more common in a population with HSD/EDS. We will cover the presentation of upper cervical instability, Chiari malformation, Eagle syndrome, cranial CSF leaks, and changes in intracranial pressure. Presentation, differential diagnosis, and in-clinic suggestions are offered.
3. Head and Neck Conditions: General Presentation
This chapter will review the conditions that are found with more frequency in the HSD/EDS population that are not considered red flags, but more common occurrences. This chapter will briefly review headaches, migraines, trigeminal neuralgia, and postconcussion syndrome.
4. Spinal Conditions in HSD/EDS
This chapter presents the spinal conditions that are more common in the HSD/EDS population along with the presentations, differential diagnosis, and in-clinic suggestions. While these conditions are considered rare in the general population, they tend to be more prevalent and/or more symptomatic within the HSD/EDS population.
5. Recognizing Priorities in Treatment
It is not unusual for a patient with HSD or EDS to present with multiple overlapping, compounding diagnoses. This can become confusing for a provider to determine the most effective place to start treatment. This chapter reviews the seven main issues we have found with our patients as places to start determining what the primary issue is and how to direct appropriate care for the most effective long-term management strategies.
