Elder abuse and mistreatment is a growing problem in our aging society, but goes largely unreported. Nursing assistants (NAs) are key members of the team in identifying possible abuse situations. This course provides NAs working in various settings with the tools to recognize potential abuse, know what to report to the nurse, how to handle challenging situations with patients and families when abuse is suspected, and ways to be proactive in preventing elder mistreatment.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. Assessing for Abuse or Mistreatment
This chapter focuses on recognizing potential abuse situations and knowing what to report to the nurse or supervisor. Clues of abuse are discussed, along with how to recognize signs and symptoms. Reporting critical information is a focus.
2. Interventions for Nursing Assistants
This chapter focuses on how to handle challenging situations in which elder abuse is suspected. Strategies for the NA to use are described, including techniques for diffusing difficult situations, such as using appropriate communication, recognizing escalating negative behaviors in body language, and talking to both the possible victim as well as the probable perpetrator.
